One more dish/direct tv question

One thing I'm curious about - direct tv said they'd hook up dvd's and vcr's but dish tv said it was at the installers discretion - they also said they'd give a 5.00 discount for having a phone hooked to the tv, why do they do that?

The phone is used for the machine to dial up and download the interactive TV guide.

You plug a phone line into the back of the unit. I have no clue why they give you a discount for it..I thought it was a requirement. Basically if you order any pay-per-view service/movie it needs that to send the information to the unit. Also..what I find handy is that it displays the number of the person who is calling on your tv when the phone rings. There have been a few occasions where I've just said..ok..that's a telemarketer..don't bother interrupting my show for that! hehe :)

Phones usually get hooked to the TV if you have a cable box that needs to talk with your cable provider for premium movie services or internet stuff. They also use the phone like to monitor your TV watching habits for marketing folks at the same time. You get a discount because you're being watched by THE MAN :)

Also, make sure there's not a hidden fee for VCR or DVD hook-ups. Sometimes there is, as it's a clever way to lure you into paying more without thinking about it. There's probably no technical reason they have to do it for you.

I'd just rather they hook up the vcr/dvd as I don't have the time to. Especially in the living room - the vcr was hooked up years ago by Mark's friend (and hooked into the stereo) and I need to figure out how to install the replacement dvd/vcr I bought.
