Camping Trip

Friday morning we left after 10 AM (ran errands and packed beforehand). First stop was the Arby's in East Stroudsburg PA for lunch.
Next stop was Steamtown USA where we just missed the last train ride of the day. But we did see the 19 minute movie at the site (we were the only 3 at that automated showing!) and watched the turntable turn a HUGE steam engine. Although several of the engines did look exactly like engines seen in Thomas the Tank Engine (minus the faces) - there is NO mention of Thomas and the related merchandise ANYWHERE there.

We then headed north. Just outside Cortlandt, we spotted an Aldi's. We had to check that out and then after getting stuff, we headed on. We then stopped in Ithaca at this neat natural foods store. We stopped - as we entered a train went by, but the noise scared Alan (it blew its horn). Alan liked the mini carts the store had in its play area. I liked their coffee and I got a quart of milk for the cabin. Then we found the park and our cabin which was #10. After we settled in, we tried to find the rest of the group. Having no luck we went to dinner - ended up being too late for fast food row on Route 13 for us or Wegman's. We browsed the local big Walmart and headed back - We ate stuff in our cabin to my disappointment. We went to bed - finding it amusing to have to go to the bathroom in the dark and later rain. I had brought flashlights though.

The next morning in the rain, we met the rest of the group at last after inquiring at the office where they were. We took Kevin, one of the member's sons with us as we tried to find Ithaca Beer. We ended up going past it, almost out of Ithaca, before turning back and finding it and rejoining the group. Alan was kind of bored there and didn't want to do a brewery tour (don't blame him). Mark and I both liked Apricot Wheat Beer there which we tasted and brought some to take home. We ended up splitting off, going to a VERY GOOD (and cheap) Chinese Buffet for lunch. We briefly checked out a new but cheap Salvation Army and then went to Sciencenter. This was a very good children's/adults science museum with much to do and a neat playground. Alan DID find train tables there but did check other stuff out.

After we left there, we headed back in the cold rain to our cabin and later dinner. It was a pot luck, we ended up bringing fruit salad (which didn't go over very well - we took a lot home - next year I'll make grilled something.) Alan spent a lot of the night playing in the mud and watching the 2 older boys Kevin and Brendon near the fire. He also surprised us by eating some sloppy joes! We crashed early (around 9). We slept pretty well except for a few bathroom breaks - and one disturbance by a hungry mouse! He got into some nacho chips we left open. He didn't scare me, I thought he/she was cute - but he/she didn't belong in our food! Alan did fall out of the bed at one point when I got up to help Mark with a bathroom visit (to find the flashlight). He was ok - although he may have scratched his nose then.

During the night we heard a roar - I thought it was the rain or wind. But by early morning I figured out it was the waterfall, very rain swollen. After breakfast we headed over to check it out - it was pretty impressive. We loaded up our car, but weren't able to join the group that was going hiking. (I'd hoped to eat at the famous Moosewood restaurant afterwards but time wouldn't permit.) So we started back to home. We stopped first at Buttermilk Falls, then at Arby's for lunch. We then drove around Cornell University which impressed Mark, got gas, found a neat dollar store in the town of Dryden and then next stopped at the Italian Festival in Scranton, PA (we'd seen a sign for it on the way up). Alan had cotton candy freeze dried icecream (like Dippin Dots) - Mark and I had various pasta dishes - I also had a cappucino - it was pretty cheap and all (except a cannoli that Alan and I didn't like) were good. The very last stop before home was Superwalmart in East Stroudsberg - we like to visit those BIG walmarts because there are none in NJ near us - Walmart didn't even come to our area until a few years ago. Got a few things and then headed home. We were home by 8:30 PM which wasn't bad.

In 2007 we will go again - we had fun and there is so much left for us to explore. Mark's allergies were ok, the cabin was nice and dark so he could sleep well.

Next year, we will close ALL food, bring sleeping bags (less to wash) and hope for better weather!

I had never been in a Wegmans before visiting my cousin last month. Reason enough to get me to move back to upstate NY.

The nearest one from us is an hour south. We stop there whenever we can - they carry Mark's favorite beef ravioli!

The entire deli section looked to be my favorite. Then I found the bakery. I knew I could not go there alone, with no one to be accountable to...I'd still be in the parking lot eating and eating and eating.

Are you familiar with Grandma Browns Baked Beans? Another favorite of mine from Central NY (along with snappys - been known to ship my clothes home and fill the suitcase with snappys, my father called them coneys).

If we get either east coast job, I will be able to do coney runs every summer. I might even have to cruise into Jersey for Jersey tomatoes.

That looks like a beautiful place!

It was and will be more beautiful without rain!

*sigh* I remember skinny dipping at Buttermilk falls in my wild grad student days....

You went to Cornell?

I applied as an undergrad but didn't get in.

I was there for my Masters degree. I had a blast! I still get nostaligic about it.

I still lust after the subs they make at Wegmans. In NY, I lived literally a stone's throw away from a Giant, but I drove a few miles away to the Wegmans across the river to do my grocery shopping.

Glad that you had a fun time! :)
