Alan's 6th year checkup

It was yesterday. I hadn't been to the office since April, it was nicely redecorated.
There were new parents there with a week old baby. So cute, so tiny. (I kept a distance away since I had a cold). I told them it gets easier - funny they got the same baby record book from the doctor I'd gotten 6 years ago.

Alan's stats:

46 1/2 inches (50th percentile)
51 lbs (75th percentile). The doctor wasn't worried about the weight, nor I am I. (I think it's really a little less, he needed #2).

Talked about a few things with the doctor (the senior doctor). Take fluoride vitamins, improve diet to help with #2 issues (less white starch, less juice - 1 a day, more water). Also more green vegetables, meat 5x a week 16-24 oz dairy. Probably easier said than done. I think he said grapes and raisins were good too. I got boxes of "Cars" raisins in snack size today - he ate some. (I wanted some raisins for oatmeal for me, won't go to waste).

Doctor also recommended learning to swim and wearing helmet + knee pads + shoulder pads when skateboarding, roller skating etc.

Doctor wasn't worried about the curled toes. I forgot to ask about the red blood vessel mark on his face (which has been there forever anyway).

Also taked about being dry at night. He said 20% still in pullups at his age. Said no drinking after dinner, bathroom use 1/2 hour and at bedtime. Leave pull ups on till consistantly dry @ night. (Of course I'd do that, I'd prefer NOT to do extra laundry).

Alan wanted peanut butter and jelly for lunch which he hadn't had in ages. He had 2 sandwiches. Afterwards I noticed his cheeks were a little red and a bump on his forehead not there earlier being noticeable. The lump had faded a lot by bedtime. Alan blamed the bump on being pushed by a friend in school, it hadn't been there earlier though. I will have to watch him next time he has peanut butter - no nut allergies in the family, my DH and SIL have food allergies which cause breakouts. He's eaten peanut butter before and I'm sure I've given him stuff made where there were nuts around as indicated on the label, so I hope it's nothing? (I'd really like him to be able to eat PBJ sandwhiches at home for the protein).

He also wants a ham sandwich - so I got some healthy ham at the grocery. I'd love if he learned to eat deli sandwiches, would be so helpful when we are out. (Not sure if he'll be like DH who will buy a roll and a pack of deli turkey and eat just that without mayo/mustard/anything on it).

And why haven't they learned to make whole wheat or whole grain pasta in a can? I'd think I can't be the only parent with a child who lives on this stuff.

Back to bed

Holy moses, that's how big Richard is now, at 4 1/2!!! Good lord, I never realize how big he is until someone posts something like this....

heh... I remember thinking the same thing about the whole grain. Although now all i wish for is gluten free stuff in a can, which is damn near impossible.

And kids + green vegetables? Who's this doctor kidding anyway? lol... Either this guy never had a kid or he's just saying it because he has to.

Maybe you can get Alan a scratch test or something similar for allergies, may save you a lot of trouble down the line. I know my kid would die without PBJ. :P

My kids eat a lot of dried cranberries, prunes, and dried blueberries. They like the taste as much or better than raisins. In fact they like it all so much, I need to limit intake. :)

Jeremy is the same weight at 11 years old. Giggle. I have a tiny child!!

Sounds like he is doing well

If you can't get him to eat more fiber in veggie or fruit form, then try substituting the tasteless stuff from Metamusil once in a while in his drinks. He won't notice the taste and it's certainly healthy. Have you tried giving him dried prunes and craisins? They taste great and if you tell him it's candy or a snack, he might be more inclined to try it.

I'm working on getting him to eat raisins. I even found some in cute little boxes with Cars characters. I have used the benefiber (like the metamucil) to give him more fiber - but now that I have to cut back juice, I have to be more creative.

(I'm thinking instead of 8 oz of juice, to mix it with water - so he'll drink more water - I use 100% juice anyway).
