The question of whether to keep a coldy child home from school

A topic of discussion in the NY Times today

I'm dealing with all 3 of us being sick. Me on cold medicine and antibiotics, DH on cold medicine and Alan who won't take medicine - I've tried.

Sigh.

He'll be OK - cold medicine largely just relieves symptoms, it doesn't cure anything. Just point out that it will make him feel better, but if he doesn't want that then he doesn't have to take any.

Yes, I have a medication noncompliant child as well, now 7-1/2. We tried switching from liquid antibiotics to chewable pills and later I found a stash of them he'd thrown behind the entertainment center...grrr.

If they have a fever I keep them home. If they don't I send them because all the other kids are sick right now anyhow, as are the teachers. It's just that time of year.
