I've been discussing with someone about the random searches of baggage going on in NYC when boarding public transit. For the second night in a row they've set up a search point at the bottom of the escalator I take to my bus. I haven't been stopped. There are other public ways to get to the same point if you don't want to be searched. Also, if you don't want to be searched, one can simply NOT take the bus (althought that may not be practical).
I'm not afraid of being searched as I would be more likely to have something weird than anything the police worry about. (My darts are home in my nighttable anyway). If I were stopped, I'd be nervous but polite. Sorry, but 5:45 PM when I'm on my way home to see my husband and son and I'm in a public place is not the time to make a scene about rights violations and legal points.
I wasn't thrilled when I fought my recent parking ticket (and the judge (who turned out to be a former Port Authority cop/9-11 survivor) was a grouch), but I tried my best to be respectful and polite.
I actually know someone who wants to be a NJ state trooper (Alan's ex-sitter's son). I would never ever want to do it, but it is his wish (and I think he will do well at it).
If I were invited to the White House for some reason, I'd be polite to President Bush even though I do not like his policies. I'd show respect for the office because it is the right thing to do. I'd probably save all my remarks about Bush for the way home.
Not all policeman are right but I think courtsey can help, it will never hurt. And remember that police also do many lifesaving things in addition to law enforcement.

However, I have the ribbon and blue bracelet shown here: http://www.thyca.org/Spirit_Items_021304.htm
Those support a cause I wish I didn't have to support.
But by supporting it, I hope eventually no one ever will have to.
