I'm meeting with the child study team on the 29th to see what's next but I'm just tossing out some thoughts based on recent observation.

Alan is a very young 3, he seems to act closer to 2 based on what I've read/seen/heard. I think he will have to wait till 6 for kindergarden as the cutoff is 2 weeks before his birthday - he seems to be consistantly just a little behind his age from some of the milestones (walking for example).

He's hard to take places like stores. He tries to run off, or will try to lie down on the floor. He doesn't scream, he smiles trying to kick me when I try to get him up. Fortunately, we tend to take him to less crowded stores although we've lost him a few times briefly. He will fuss a little going into a cart but is ok once in.

At home he likes tv a lot. He's less interested in commercial tv (the nick/pbs/cartoon channel/disney) we usually restrict him too. He's into videos now - it was thomas, now (suddenly) its bob the builder. He also likes Dora and Spongebob. He cries and gets upset if you turn it off. I have discovered I can sometimes leave it on QVC in the background and he's happy.

We are working on a new rule for all of us - no tv/comptuer till after dinner and Alan must sit with us and eat something (nutritious). It's hard because we get home late and right now have no microwave. But it will be better for all of us. He did better last night having cereal and milk, a yohoo and 1/2 a fruit in gel - the night before all he wanted was olives. He suddenly seemes to be bored with the gerber meat sticks he ate last week. I would like him to eat more than starches, fruit and dairy - he needs some protein and vegetables (pickles and olives aren't veggies really).

His vocabulary is improving, but I'm not sure his conversational skills are where they should be. He can answer color questions and sometimes letter and shape ones, but won't answer with his name or age. He also tends to say this one or this a lot instead of the object name. He can say short sentences though. We understand a lot of what he says (but not all). He also tends to be LOUD which he may have gotten from me. Last night he was shouting "Don't do anything" before bed! He does tend to talk the most at night before bed.

He's so so with toys. Cars and truck yes, imaginary play not so much. And he's not drawing so much now. He does like books and being read to.

His best behavior is in the car. We can take a 2-3 hour ride with no complaints. He looks around or sleeps. He doesn't talk much to us - but maybe that's because Mark and I tend to talk to each other and not to him in the car. But he doesn't need a DVD to amuse him, and I hope he never does.
