Books Read

Finished two more books recently, both from the town library sale.

Riding in Cars with Boys was the first one I read. It's the story of a single mother (a bit of a free sprit) raising her son in the 1960's through 1980's. It was quick read but interesting. It was made into a movie with Drew Barrymore (which I haven't seen) but I could see her as the lead role.

The Guy Not Taken was the next one I read. It's by Jennifer Weiner. It's a collection of short stories she's written over the years. Some were very good, but the title story left me feeling a bit odd. It does fall into the "chick-lit" category, but I find for the most part her characters are likeable and realistic and the plots hold your interest.

Puppet is the current one I'm reading. I liked Joy Fielding's first novel See Jane Run and have read other books by her. But I'm having a hard time with this one. Despite it's interesting settings of Palm Beach, Florida and Toronto, Canada - the main character Amanda Travis leaves me somewhat cold, she's not someone I particularly like. But I'll probably finish this one on the bus tommorrow.

Finally time to write a real update of sorts. Been busy at work with a software release deadline of 2/15 (and now it may snow on 2/14.)

Yesterday all 3 of us hit another town library for a book sale. This sale was a bag for 3.00. They had tons of adult books there, but a very tiny selection of children's books. Still we managed to stuff a bag too full of 20+ books! We got some biographies for my MIL, a book on negotiating for my SIL, 1 or 2 business books for DH, 2 books for Alan (dinosaurs and monster trucks) and the rest for me including a book on making kids lunches. Alan managed to stick one book in the bag - he saw a Len Dighton spy thriller with a picture of a cut apple with a knife on the cover, so he wanted it. I tried to tell him no, but ended up taking the book anyway. I don't know what I'll do with it though. I am not sure what I will do with the books I've read. I'd love to bookcross them or trade them with someone.

I wasn't feeling 100% so I went to the doctor after we came home. Turns out I have a sinus infection and levaquin and mucinex DM were prescribed. I went to Target to fill the prescription and ended up browsing around. Managed to find a Cabbage Patch Doll for 6.98 for a birthday gift for a party Alan's going to next weekend. (Last one left, no price on it).

Later we went to MIL. I also picked up an Over-The-Shoulder-Baby Holder for a friend who is expecting in May. I know that kind didn't work for me, but for free she could try it.

Today we were out and about. First we stopped at Menlo Park mall. DH heard a former coworker owned a donut store there. No donut store was found, but it was a nice mall to walk around. Saw Rainforest Cafe but Alan was scared from the roaring sounds to really look around. I was surprised it was still there, because the other one near us closed several years ago.

Next stop was our friends house to drop off my old maternity clothes and some baby related stuff (including the sling). While showing her the stuff in the tote I found an odd sock - it was one I had the other one to at home in the mismatched pile in my hamper! So they were reunited later on in the day.

Afterwards we went to my old sci-fi club meeting at a Borders bookstore. We had to return something to another member (stuff we tried to sell on eBay for them). Anyway, I didn't have much fun there and neither did DH - we ended up having to constantly watch Alan as he went back and forth to the childrens section. I guess the meeting was boring to him and he couldn't really sit still. Did briefly catchup with people - but probably will only do activities for while. It was interesting to see how the club has changed since I joined them back in 1997 - new faces I didn't know and the group has matured - talking about charity stuff now, that wouldn't be a consideration then.

I'm bracing for the storm Tuesday night/Wednesday. I suspect I WILL have to clean out the closet tommorrow night and find my snow boots. I just hope I can go sledding with Alan out of the storm. Or make a snow man or do some snow fun!
