So we finally start to look for a car in person.
We went to a local dealer. I didn't expect to buy there but wanted to check a few cars to see if they would meet our needs - the Aveo, the Cobalt and the Ford Focus. I was so so with Aveo, disappointed they didn't fix the Cavalier design flaw in the Cobalt and more impressed with the Focus than I was previously. (In the Cavalier and Cobalt, although the back seats do fold down as a 60/40 split, there is another panel behind them, limiting access to the full back of the car from the trunk to a small narrow opening - fine for skis, but not lots of other cargo). The Focus has normal folding back seats, like a hatchback even if it has a regular trunk.
Anyway, we decided to check out a dealer (Compass Dodge) in Orange, NJ. Orange isn't the best town, but the prices were pretty good. Drove a used 2006 Focus - had some dings, but looked clean inside and ran well (I think it was a former Enterprise Rental Car). As we were going to write a check to pay for the car - it turned out the 7990.00 price was an internet special, 50% more if you pay in cash! Basically, they didn't want anyone to buy in cash it seemed - I don't get it - in this economy, wouldn't you want the sure sale and commission vs credit where someone may be denied or stop paying on the loan?
So we left the car behind and sadly we are back to 1.5 cars which makes next week depressing - 2 days off with Alan and no car. Figured out how to do 1 day, may have to go with my MIL the other day.
And the following week, Veteran's Day - I'm off and Alan and Mark aren't. Without a car I'm stuck home. So, I just may WORK and take off another day later...I never skip holidays. And with stuff going on at work, I'm not motivated to work much these days.
