Baby Class
Sep. 7th, 2002 09:11 pmDespite his grumbles, I think DH got more out of this than childbirth class (more lively instructor).
There were a lot of people in the class, a few solo mom's, one solo dad, and a mom with pregnant teen daughter and an elementary school age daughter. (We didn't get to talk to anyone though, I wasn't being social with my cold :( ). The instructor was a mom herself, her little ones were 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 - she said you can get pregnant breastfeeding :)
Some notes:
Recommended the Sears Baby Book - a middle of the road approach
No powder in diaper area - can put on hand and use on body
Recommended Chix Cloths #4102 (by Johnson and Johnson) and warm water first 6 weeks - not diaper wipes or a washcloth
Recommended Triple Paste Diaper Cream (from CVS) or a pharmacy for diaper rash
Use alcohol pads not cotton/rubbing alcohol for cleaning umbillical stump
Olive Oil for cradle cap (I told DH we can get a new small bottle, if we don't use it, we can use it in the kitchen).
She preferred hot vaporizers (used safely) over the cold mist ones.
She talked about co-sleeping and suggested using "dreft-like" detergent on the sheets if you do this. I asked her if I should do this even if we just want to cuddle the baby in bed - she said yes because the newborn skin is sensitive. (When I got home I found the last 2 bottles of detergent I bought happened to be the dreft-like "no dyes etc" stuff from Arm and Hammer, so I'll start using it on everything, can't hurt).
Keep the baby dressed one layer warmer than you are as a guide.
She also suggested letting the baby sleep on his/her side during the day with a rolled receiving blanket to "prop" him, it helps develop muscles. Alternate sides - but put him/her on the back at night.
Useful stuff in the class, next week we learn about growth and development (45 minute video) and the about health and safety. I do wish we'd had some hands on practice holding a baby (or a doll) and diapering. (At least we have our friends 3 month old baby to try...we've both bottle fed him and burped him, neither of us has tried changing him yet.)
We also got a list of all the peditricians in the hospital. Turns out there is one in our town, but she may not be on our insurance.
