Good morning. I've made it safely home from NYC after the big blackout.
When the power went out in our office around 4:10, we thought it was due to construction in our office or something. Went down 5 flights of dark stairs (must yell at office manager about non working emergency lights) and some of the company gathered in our emergency spot (must mention we need to follow emergency proceedures) and then people started to leave for home.
I ended up wandering around Port Authority (where NJ buses leave from) for sometime with a coworker who lives near me. We ended up finally getting on a ferry after 8PM to Weehawken, NJ. We met someone who lived in my coworkers town and they gave me a ride to my car and a my coworker a ride home. I briefly got in touch on a cell with my mother in law whom I sent to pick up Alan - I had no idea where DH was and if he'd gotten Alan.
Made it home around 9:30. DH (Mark) had picked up Alan and he was asleep when I got home (good boy). My mother in law had also come by earlier and they fed Alan dinner. Mark had briefly lost power in Central NJ (New Providence) but got home safely with no problems.
Went to sleep, but DH hadn't changed Alan before bed. Sometime during the night Alan cried, and I changed him by flashlight, he was soaked. He spend the rest of the night in my bed :)
Power came on at 4:20 or so. DH went on the internet after that (he couldn't sleep).
I spoke to my boss this AM, I don't have to go into NYC - DH left for his job since he's in NJ. Alan's in the living room watching TV. The 2 PBS stations aren't working, Disney channel has no sound, so he's watching the hamster cartoon on the Cartoon Network.
It kind of reminds me of 9/11 - but unlike 9/11 I wasn't on jury duty :(
I can't believe after the blackouts of 1965 and 1978 that the power grid failed so drastically!

Not much.
Paid my baby sitter for the last 2 weeks, I was going to pay her last night for this past week...but I couldn't :)
I borrowed back the small stroller we gave her as DH had taken the stroller in his car to work. (We keep the stroller in one of the cars for space reasons).
Then I tried to go to the bank in the supermarket but the supermarket was closed. Drove a bit, checked a branch in a nearby town it didn't look open. I continued on my errand for DH to pickup some photos. There was a branch of my bank next door and the ATM worked. After getting an iced coffee, I continued on my way. Ended up passing and stopping at kmart. I don't usually get there, ended up stopping and checking stuff. Got an outfit for Alan for next year for 2.00 and an Elmo and Cookie Monster shirt for the fall (I think Kmart has the Sesame Street clothing license).
Then went to the mall. Stopped at Gymboree and got Alan a pair of socks. Looked at the "Look Book" for upcoming lines. Boys lines still haven't improved much. Dropped a watch off to get a battery replaced. Ate lunch (orange chicken). Alan had a little rice and his bottle. Walked back via Children's Place and JC Penny. Tried on stuff in JC Penny, no luck. Continued to Baby Gap and Old Navy. Old Navy decided to make my favorite striped shirts for Alan in long sleeve (ones a multicolor, the other shades of blue) - So I HAD to get them. Picked up my watch, went home and Alan took a nap. Started laundry and that's about it.
DH is at the supermarket now, I'm guessing they are open. When he gets back Alan and I will take a bath. It might be good for my blistered feet from yesterday.
Our website is still down at work. Chelsea, the part of NYC where my office is (23rd and 5th) is apparently one of the last parts of NYC to get power. Good thing I didn't even try to come to work. (and I didn't miss thinking about it all day :))
