I bought Alan the newest Dora dvd as *I* got tired of the same one over and over.
The old dvd started and then there was a choice of previews or main menu. So 2 presses of enter and you are all set.
The new one has previews stuck in front just like a video. Grr.

Alan seems to like it though.

And they don't let you avoid watching the previews, right? I keep getting these DVD's on rental where you have no choices about what to do until the previews are over. So irritating.

Somewhere in some law hidden somewhere was a rule that said that DVDs didn't have to offer the FF through commercials option. There's a distinct line somewhere in time where they don't have commercials and where they do. Drives me NUTS!

IME, you can usually just skip a chapter and get to the beginning of the actual movie. Gabe's had a few DVDs like that.

Usually you can hit 'menu' to skip that crap.

Ads on DVDs and (even worse) theater screenings are a big peeve of mine -- they bother me a lot more than TV ads because TV ads pay for the programming, so that's just the price of the show...so if I've paid actual money for the movie, I should damn well not have to sit through advertising. This is one of the many reasons why there is only a small handful of movies that I will see in the theater; I find it offensive that I have to pay $9 or $10 to see the movie and then sit through freakin' commercials. At least with DVDs I can usually skip them or, if I have to, leave the room until they're over.

Some DVD players can be patched to bypass annoyances like that. We have 3 DVD players, and the two nice ones force you to sit through the FBI & Interpol warnings and any ads, but my cheap $60 Apex player has been patched to change regions at will, and to allow skipping the intro BS. I just wish I could remember where I found the patch...

I've got one Apex and one Daewoo - it would be nice to patch them :)

I'll poke around and try to find a site with patches sometime this week. When I find them, I'll post a link here. :)

I really dislike that Nick figured out they were missing an advertising beat by allowing folks to skip the promos. Worse yet, the promos often include 'The Rugrats' on the preschool DVDs. I have an issue with that.
I got Zoe and TJ their own Netflix account piggy backed to mine. Zoe is so thrilled to receive a new movie every week. Bonus, she knows that once a month there will be a special 'family' (read a movie too intense for her to watch without us) film in the mail-box for her, but she doesn't know what it will be until it arrives.

I hate that, too. The movie that has annoyed me the most was the 3rd HP one. The first two HP movies had no previews, and if you popped one in and walked away, they'd end up starting themselves eventually. I loved that. The latest one? TWO horrible previews AND it won't start automatically! Argh!

This is why I want to put another DVD in my machine... for all those
damn DVDs that have JUNK at the front, to rip out JUST the movie and reburn a "fixed" version for normal viewing.
