My husband's car was towed to the mechanics on Saturday - engine turned over, didn't start, couldn't be jumped. Although the car won't be ready until tommorrow, it just needs a tune up. My husband is taking the battery to Sears for replacement as it was purchased in December 2004.

In the craziness Saturday with being unable to get his car working, he had put the receipt for the battery in the pile with the book and cd's being returned to the library. So it got dropped off there - I e-mailed the library last night and called this AM, they had the receipt which made my husband happy. (and me too!)

Hopefully his car will be good for a while. We have a GM Test Drive coupon that will give us a 50.00 gift certificate to DSW shoes, it would be nice to have fun with it and not use it in a buying frenzy!

I need 2 rear tires soon but that's a quick fix on a Saturday.

Well, depending how old your car is. Mine still has a distributor and its timing can be adjusted... but I've been driving it 16 years now. :-)

I've had my car since 1997, it's a 1995 with 62K miles on it. Mark's is 1997 with 120k miles.

I remember when my dad would fiddle with cars and take off the air cleaner and open the choke to get a car going. People don't do that anymore.

Yep, that's pretty rare nowadays!

I think my husband just had the fuel filter replaced. His car has 120K miles on it and he's not so great on regular oil changes. I think this mechanic is pretty honest, he's done my car since 1999, Mark uses him some of the time but not all time.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, too. When I saw about replacing the battery and trying to jump start it, I was like "wha...?" I always forget that I actually know about cars. I just don't know where the bits are and how to fix them. I guess it comes from having every single car problem ever known at one point or another. ;)

Oh, and the tuneup thing... I suspect nowadays it's more of a cleaning out of your exhaust in general. I have a light that essentially tells me when something's wrong with my exhaust, and one that tells me if it's my electrical system. If the exhaust one comes up, the mechanic says "tuneup" and it goes away. And there must be something to it, since Missouri won't pass a car on inspection if that little light's on.
