Favorite Bands/Festivals
Apr. 3rd, 2003 09:57 amWe have a few favorite groups we've discovered through fairs/festivals.
One is Friday's Child http://www.frichild.com/ which sometimes plays in local Borders bookstores for free. We took Alan to a concert one in January but the store was small and the band was loud, he got cranky so we left.
Two others we discovered at Musikfest (www.musikfest.org) - Fruit http://www.fruit.on.net/ (an Australian band) and Zen For Primates http://www.bummertent.com/Featured.htm (not updated much, alas). Zen is a very quirky band, you like them or NOT.
We've also discovered a lot of neat stuff from WFUV radio (www.wfuv.org) in NY. DH listens to them a lot, it's a "folk" station but it is a combo of folk/adult-alternative/classic rock etc. A band we found on there (actually its one person) is Badly Drawn Boy. www.badlydrawnboy.co.uk or www.badlydrawnboy.com
We get a lot of our CD's from our library system. Our library system (www.bccls.org) allows you to reserve CD's/books over the web. We reserve them as we hear of them. They get delivered to our library (sometimes we have to wait and retry for new ones, either they aren't in the library system yet or too new for interlibrary loan), we pick them up, copy them and return them. Sometimes they don't copy or are scratched but we've gotten a lot of music this way.
I just finished listening to a copy of Hall and Oates newest one "Do It For Love". Very good album, not getting much radio play alas. We saw them last summer at the NJ Balloon Festival and they were great. Alan even kicked in my stomach a bit to them (he hasn't heard the album yet.)
We are looking forward to Musikfest (and the other Lehigh Valley Festival - Mayfair) this summer. We went for one day to Musikfest last year, but it was too hot and we didn't really like ANY of the bands that day. There weren't even good BIG ($) acts last year, but this year looks good with B-52's and Jethro Tull so far. 2 years ago we saw Huey Lewis and The News who were still very good.
