I got another "subrogation" letter from our health insurance company regarding Alan's visit to the ER last month for his nursemaid's elbow.

Basically, they want to see if anyone else is liable for his accident. Well, as I told them, no one is - he pulled on my arm, and I doubt Wendy's where it happened is liable (and I don't know the address of it anyway!)

They sent me a similar letter in 2004 about my thyroid removal surgery as it was coded as open wound in throat. I so wanted to write "If you can find out how I got thyroid cancer, go ahead and sue them!"

I'm glad we've changed to United Health care as an administrator (we are self insured)!

Oh man, I had an insurance company do that to me once. I slipped and fell in a national park while camping and dislocated my wrist. I was in a splint, bent 90 degrees at the elbow, palm up for 6 weeks! (it looked like a joke, all I needed was the little metal bar to hold it up and it would have been a bad comedy sketch!) The cheapo insurance I had at the time send me forms every 2 weeks asking for more info. I tried to play along for the first few forms (I was climbing a hill, I lost my footing, I was camping, etc) but finally I sent it back sying "I was in a NATIONAL PARK. I SLIPPED AND FELL ON MY AXE! There is NO homeowner to chase after for the bill!" and they finally stopped!

I can't believe that they wanted to know how you got cancer! Do people actually READ the forms they make up fill out?

No, they didn't want to know how I got cancer. They wanted to know how I got the open throat wound (from thyroid removal). I just wish I could have told them to sue someone/something that caused the cancer :)

This still has me rolling my eyes! "Dear insurance company. I got the open wound when the surgeon cut a hole in my neck to remove a cancer. It was very hard to remove the cancer without first cutting a hole. Thank you for your time."

Thanks for this discussion -- it reminded me that I still have to investigate why my health insurance plan STILL hasn't paid for most of my physical therapy last fall (because of a shoulder injury). I think the company is hoping that I'll sue myself or something. :-(
