That was a great article (and I've been guilty of some of the illogical economics mentioned!) Thanks!

I don't know if people manage money at all - that's the problem. :)
I've cut down on Starbucks. And I do miss it. They make better coffee than me. But I can buy the syrup for $6.99 and microwave my milk and make do. And even tho my husband wants a flat panel TV we stillh aven't bought one. Altho we may buy it at Walmart if we do.

I've stopped using coupone because they're always for name brands that I don't buy. I just buy generic store brands. Or what's on sale. That helps.

I'm still bad about coffee myself. I really should try to use the local bagel place for coffee as it's cheaper than getting it in NYC.

We did get a flat screen tv on sale - but the living room tv was dying and would have had to be replaced anyway.

I'd love a flat screen monitor, but even at 99.00 (*) - it it isn't broke, don't fix it.

* 99.00 on sale at Staples on Black Friday. Probably need to be there at way-too-early in the AM anyway.

I wouldn't pay that much either - but in Manhattan if you don't have a car to shop the cheaper suburbs your options are limited.

We get a lot of vegetables/fruit at the local farmers market - or local Grocer (which used to be in the farmers market). Sometimes the fruit/veggie is about to go bad and has to be eaten quickly - but you get lots of bargains that way.

This is an interesting article, I may have to repost! I think also there is a difference between being cheap in one area in order to splurge in another and just missing the mark on basic finance.
