So tonight was the much hyped Sponge Bob: Truth or Square Episode (anyone who's watched Nick this week saw the commercials, I'm sure it was on Nick Jr, Nicktoons and the N also).
My review is below
The episode started out as most of the Sponge Bob "special" episodes do, with Patchy the Pirate in the front. He was trying to do something for the 10th anniversary and as part of it was calling random celebrities such as Rosario Dawson, Will Ferrel, LeBron James, Craig Ferguson (late night tv talk show) and Robin Williams. None of which I felt were particularly kid known - well maybe Will Ferrell. I am surprised Nick didn't stick in one their stars like Victoria Justice or Miranda Cosgrove while they were at it. Cut up into pieces with the Patchy bits was the epsiode itself - with the much hyped bit of Sponge Bob and Sandy marrying. Well, it turned out to be about all of 2 minutes and it was revealed as a play - to me this looked like part of an epsiode they never finished - that might have been funnier. The plot of the animated bits was basically that on the 11th seventyth anniversary the gang was locked in the freezer vault and had to get out - I did miss some of it so I wasn't sure how the flashbacks actually came into the plot (like the play) - but they weren't playing truth or dare as the episode title would lead you to believe.
They had some cute bits for animation fans - there was a Krusty Krab commercial done in black and white and a 50's/60's style and another bit done in the style of 20's cartoons (like Steamboat Willie) - this bit looked like part of an episode they didn't finish - although a whole episode in this style might not work today. They also did a bit as part of the Patchy part with the title sequence redone for other characters in the lead: Patrick, Squidward, Mr. Crabs (although his name didn't fit so well). That was cute.
But the Patchy stuff was lame and felt like they just stuffed it in to make the episode an hour and the animated story wasn't cut well - it made it choppy. I'd love to see an alternate take on the DVD without the Patchy part.
Nick also managed to stuff in a promo for the new Alvin and the Chipmunks movie (did it need a sequel or squeekquel?) and their new series "The Big Rush" (which has nothing to do with the band Rush, not that Nick's audience would think that). It's another older teen series about 4 cute guys who become Pop Stars. I guess their last attempt to do basically this, Naked Brothers Band flopped.
Basically with one of their shows that doesn't cut out the younger range of their target audience (ie 6 and up), they've not done a very good job. Maybe it's 5 years of watching this network almost all the time has made me more cynical and jaded - but I don't like the direction they are going in and am really trying to encourage Alan to watch other things in his TV time. If only Cartoon network didn't show the stuff Alan likes or would like in the early AM (Gormitti, Yugioh, Pokemon, Backugan). (I don't have DVR) - and Bakugan held the distinction of the only thing Alan would watch that wasn't on Nick for sometime (he's as big a fan of them as he was of Thomas the Tank Engine (which I miss)).
Anway, the DVD is out on Tuesday the 10th - Nick wastes no time getting them out there.
