There is a new virus, W32.Gruel@mm, that causes extensive damage.

This virus is a worm that spreads by email and file-sharing networks. Its payload includes changing user passwords, hiding the C: drive, deleting system files and making numerous changes to the system registry.

The email has the following characteristics:

Subject: Microsoft Windows Critical Update.
Attachment: Windows Critical Update 088562.exe

This worm has a high distribution and can cause extensive damage.

Microsoft does not distribute patches through e-mail. The attachment must not be executed. If you receive an e-mail at home (or through a non-Notes email system at work (note, I have Lotus notes at work)) that matches the description above, delete the e-mail promptly.

Heheheh

I get these all of the time.

Of course, I have to chuckle, that "Microsoft" would send me a patch... when I run Linux.

You would think people would have learned by now NEVER TO OPEN EMAIL ATTACHMENTS when you don't know what they are...pretty much every time I've gotten such messages, my first thought upon reading the email was, "Virus!" But maybe I'm just jaded. :-)
