We live in a 3 story condo apartment building. We are on the ground floor. Each living room has a balacony. Ours, being the ground floor unit has a below ground patio (5-6 feet down) that sticks out about 6 feet further than the ones upstairs. It has some old thin astroturf on the floor.

Our upstairs neighbors (2 flights) up are George and Eleanor. Her stepdaughter Heather (about 16-17) and their 13 month old son Georgie live with them. There has been tension between Heather and Eleanor in the past.

This morning we were in our second bedroom playing on the computer etc - typical morning stuff for us. We heard a lot of screaming from outside...went to check it out - it was Eleanor, her son had fallen from his balcony onto ours! Apparently Heather was watching...we didn't see the fall, we aren't sure what happened or how it happened. Georgie was screaming and bleeding. Police were called - about 6 cop cars came and EMS and it was chaotic. They came through our messy place to get to the patio to get Georgie and take him to the hospital. (You can just jump into our balcony from outside, but that wasn't good for EMS). Alan got upset from the screams and was crying. We kept him out of the way in the master bedroom while EMS was here -- but it took a while for him to calm down and smile. Oddly enough one of the officers that came was the one who'd put the car seats in our cars. They took pictures of the balcony and other things and took names and numbers of witness (apparently someone in the apartment one flight up saw him falling..) It was very stressful - we had to leave afterwards to go take Alan to his sitters so we could attend a wedding later today.

We got home tonight and spoke to George. Georgie is in the hospital (possibly in intensive care). He lost 2 bottom teeth. He also had multiple skull fractures and will need to be monitored for a year for brain damage. Please send vibes and prayers that he'd be ok.

This whole incident has me very shaken. Alan's fall (where he fell out of a high chair unstrapped and lost 4 teeth) seems like NOTHING in comparison to this -- a baby can fall out of a high chair...but off a 3rd floor balcony?? (The sitter told us only 2 cop cars came when Alan fell...not 6!)

This kind of thing scares the crap out of me. I hope the little dude is ok. I am so afraid of Teddy falling or getting dropped.

Oh my god!!! That's terrifying. Do they think Heather had something to do with it??

I can't really say if Heather had anything to do with it as the times we've seen Heather with Georgie everything was fine. We'd seen them Saturday night, she was holding him and admiring Alan's reeboks - having looked for shoes like that for Georgie. We know there were incidents between the 2 of them, we've stayed out. The one odd thing is that Heather has never had a key to the apartment. Ever. We'd see her waiting outside in the past. The mom was nervous about Heather holding Georgie when he first came home from the hospital, but I think that was a new mom thing.

Hugs and prayers to Georgie!!

And to you and your family too -- it must have been awful to have that happen so soon after Alan's accident!

Very scary after Alan's accident. At least Alan didn't see anything and he won't get flashbacks. I think the cops were a lot more suspicious of Georgie's fall than Alan's - I know our sitter said the straps weren't fastened, and it is a lot more likely a baby could fall out of a high chair than to be left unattended on a balcony.

The awfulest thing I've heard on an internet list was a mom who's baby drowned in the bathtub....I couldn't live with that at all.

OMG.
I am catching up, so this is a very late post. I hope that baby's okay. How terrifying.

The main reason we didn't get a two-story house is because I didn't want to have to worry about my kids tumbling out of upper floor windows or balconies.

Georgie is fine, although his parents have moved out (planned before the fall). The only visible damage was a black mark under one eye - and 2 lost front bottom teeth.

I'm glad we are on the ground floor also. He'd have to climb OUT of our terrace.
