We live in apartments that are convered to condos. We are on the bottom floor and mailboxes are on the middle floor. There is a shelf under the mailboxes to leave outgoing mail.

This morning I left Alan for a second to drop some outgoing mail off. As I ran back down, I heard the door slam (I think Alan closed it)! It was locked! Fortunately someone came by with cell phone and I called my mother in law who lives 15 mintues away with the keys. Meanwhile Alan was alone in the apartment, where he could get in TONS of trouble (we definitely have some not-child-safe stuff around partially due to the ongoing work on the place). He was crying a little off and on and I could hear him playing with his toys by the door (thank goodness he loves his intellitable). My mother in law finally came, and let me. Alan was basically fine - he'd pulled some shotglasses off a shelf and knocked over some picture frames on an end table, but didn't get into anything DANGEROUS. My MIL was very low key about it and not upset (she's like that...I love her).

So Alan and I went off to daycare a little late (I called my boss and sitter on the way) and all was well. Oddly enough the 11 AM meeting I was worried about today was cancelled as my co-worker is home with a sick daughter.

I thought about calling the police about the door, but would have been worried that social services would become involved and we'd get in trouble for the messy apartment :(

Oh my, what a scare! Glad everything turned out good. I still remember Dustin locking himself in the bathroom when he was that age. Of course, I didn't have the patience and it wasn't an outside door, so I busted it down and sent him to his room for fiften minutes. ;P

I did it once before

When Alan was about 5 weeks old, I actually locked myself out - I was taking off my shoes from coming home in the rain and the door closed. I was upset because I thought I'd left Alan in the carrier on the table (he was on the floor). My MIL bailed me out also that time.

Yikes! Glad it was no more than a scare.

When Teddy was about five months old, I almost left him in the car. I guess I still wasn't used to having a baby in the backseat. I found a parking spot in town, got out of the car, put money in the meter, and started to walk away. I was only a four or five steps away when I realized he was still in the car. It's the little things that keep us on our toes!

What I used to do was wait until my son was down for his nap. Then I'd run down stairs to take out the garbage and pick up the mail, and then run back. It took all of about 5 minutes. And I still felt guilty - even though I KNEW he was sleeping.

Now when he was about 12 to 18 months, he was home with his daddy. We had an indoor storage closet, where my hubby kept all of his computer books, and parts and what not. Hubby was on the phone, so he wasn't paying attention when he went into the closet. Next thing he knows the door closes. That wasn't so bad, except that there was a chair leaning against the wall that Scotty (my son) bumped into when he turned around and it fell against the door. So I get this call at work - "Hon I'm trapped in the closet".

Don't feel bad. It happened to me once. I was taking out the garbage and my son thought it would be a most wonderful idea to lock me out. After five minutes of banging on the door, he finally realized that it would be in his best interest to let me back in.

After that, whenever I went down the hall to take out the garbage, I took my keys with me.

Don't feel bad.
I locked myself out of the house once when Aaron was about 18 months old. I was hugely pregnant with Hannah and couldn't climb in through any windows or anything. And I didn't want to go to get help because I didn't want to leave him alone. So I stood outside of my house and called, "Hello? Hello?" until my across the street neighbors, who are retired, heard me - after what seemed like an eterntiy. Then they let me use their phone to call my mom, who had to come over with her set of keys and let me in.
Aaron was as happy as could be...fortunately we'd childproofed everything because he was into everything from very young, so he didn't hurt himself.

I'm sure every parent has a similar story. We all lose some brain cells when the kids are wee.

Either my MIL or SIL read somewhere that you lose 10 IQ points per kid (or is it brain cells (hhmm??))...but you are supposed get 5 back by the time they are a year old. Well I'll tell you what, my kids kept ALL of mine!! :D

Thats ok I rather they be smarter. ;D
