I decided to take Alan to Stride Rite today for shoes. I wanted a walker's shoe with velcro not laces.
They measured his foot (I had him wear thicker socks so I'd be sure they'd fit with different socks). Size 5.5, with an instep, but not wide. The salesman showed me 3 choices in his recommended size 6 - 2 white sneakers and a brown workboot. Neither impressed me, and I knew I had some size 6 sneakers stashed somewhere (second hand ones). I didn't feel like paying 30-40 a pair of white sneakers that Alan will scuff as he's still crawls every so often. So I went next door to Payless shoes. Found a pair of cool Tonka sneakers - black with 1 thick velcro strap and with construction stuff on them in yellow. The tip of the toe was also black (less to scuff). Looked very comfy and were only 14.99. Alan even seemed to like them (or at least the tag). He actually seemed to be doing better on his feet with them tonight.

Now that I know what size he is, I have a bunch of small size 4's to figure out what to do with (save for the fall clothes swap, keep, or even Ebay?)

Both my kids have W I D E feet. It's off to Nordy's or Stride Rite for me at shoe time. I'm so happy when we start wearing sandals again, as sandals are a forgiving shoe for the wide foot (and Lands End shoes and sandals run wide, whee!) so I'm not paying $40-50.
