You know, I have mixed feelings about this... Because of this mom's career ambitions, this newborn was left with nurses and doctors, and kept away from mom needlessly. That's not cool, in my opinion.
The law is still wrong. I agree that people shouldn't have to chose between their careers and their families. Just the same, many decisions in life come down to having to sort your priorities.
Okay, here's where all you parents and I tend to differ. My first thought on reading this was something like, if this woman knew that she was having this exam in January, and if it was so important to her, why did she get pregnant right then -- couldn't she have waited? And if they wouldn't make a medical exemption for anyone else with a legitimate illness or whatever, why should she get special treatment? A lot of women nowadays seem to think that they are entitled to extra benefits just because they have kids, but those benefits often come at the expense of those who have not chosen to reproduce, and it isn't fair to the rest of us.
That said, I do think this particular woman's priorities are way out of whack, and that the law should have a blanket medical exemption for anyone who's hospitalized for whatever reason -- a make-up exam or a special proctor so they can take it in the hospital.
I stand corrected on that first question about why she didn't wait to get pregnant -- on rereading the article, I notice that she didn't find out until she was 6 months along.
