I wrote some stuff my LJ today about Iraq and Alan being sick. No one commented :(

(I thought the majority my LJ friends have similar political views, so I was hoping someone one would notice.)

Sorry Leslie, I saw it but didn't get a chance to comment yet. I think it is a wonderful thing that your town is doing to honor one of its own. If I were you I probably would go to the viewing to honor his committment to our freedom and protection.

I'm sorry honey. I barely have time to write lately and have not kept up with my friends on here at all. I'm sorry your son is ill.

That depends on whether you think the whole Iraq war was a mistake and should never have been started. Bush and Blair have ended up in exactly the mess that many predicted when they started it - with an unsolveable mess and the world in a more dangerous state than when they started. I could do a full political rant but it's such a nice day outside that it would be a shame to spoil the mood.

Poor mite, I hope he's better soon. Sending get well soon thoughts from Scotland.

I've only just sat down to read LJ, had a very hectic day.

I figured you already know how I stand on the Shrub administration in general... but of course I don't hate the individual soldiers who are involved. (Someone on my friend's list has a father who is going to be sent on his second tour of Iraq this summer -- he's a military physician, but he will be in harm's way nevertheless.)

I'm sorry that a young man in your town died, and I think it's perfectly OK for you to pay your respects if you want to. You may not have known him, but you know someone who knew him, and that means something too.

That's my general view, don't like the war, but respect the soliders. I may try to stop on the way home tommorrow, but it depends on traffic and picking up Alan (his daycare is right near town hall - there could be traffic delays on my bus which also goes right past there).

Obviously I hope Alan feels better fast!

And I hope those Westboro Baptist #####-ers get their #### up their ###### and I also say ####### (censored for the workplace, but I think you know what I mean!).

I'm just so very unsure of where I stand on the political front these days, that it is hard for me to comment. I DO think the whole protesting thing is rather absurd. It's not solving anything, and does send a highly charged EMOTIONAL message to the soldiers who are merely doing what they signed up to do. And they are brave to follow through with it. I think the only people who feel better for protesting so outwardly and vehementely are the protesters themselves.

Even watching protesting at abortion clinics and viewing protesting from the Vietnam era on documentaries gets me sort of confused. Protesting outside with mean/ugly/hateful poster boards seems to not really mean anything other than their personalities are coming out ahead of the principles of issues.

All in all, I'm thankful for people like your deceased friend, and by all means would feel the need to show my respect for such an awesome display of bravery.

Hope your baby is feeling better soon too!

I actually hadn't seen the entries yet, but would have commented on both when I got to them.

I'm sorry Alan is sick... sick toddlers are difficult. Josh just got over being sick and he's still just not eating well and really wiped out by the end of the night, but at least he's on the upswing again. It's no fun when they're sick.

And as for the soldier, I'm glad your town is pulling together to honor him. I'm sure soldiers from Kansas City have been killed, but we barely even hear about it on the news, let alone know about viewing or any kind of organized events to honor the soldiers. I am, in general, against the war, but very much in support of the soldiers fighting it - they're fighting for our country, for our freedoms and I am very aware that they're out there, putting themselves at risk so that maybe I won't be. And that makes every one of them a hero in my eyes.

For what it's worth, there's been a general malaise in livejournal comments of late, you're not the only one effected or who's noticed. I wouldn't let it concern you, it's not a reflection of your content or how people feel about you. People just seem to be really busy or dealing with their own drama of late. ;)

Hopefully people learned from the Vietnam thing - one can be against the war and yet still support the people who are committed by contracts and oaths to be there fighting it no matter what they think of it. My sister was recently deployed to Iraq, and oddly enough since then, my retired military dad who has generally been very pro-shrub has sent several "End the war soon" type briefs via email. It takes a personal connection to make the idiocy click for some.

As for Alan - I know just how much of a handful sick toddlers are, so I hope he gets over it quickly and with minimal fuss. I did see the other posts, but having been out of commission for a couple of days, was mostly just in skim and catch up mode.

I hate it when that happens!

i read your post on the soldier this morning but didn't comment since I didn't have time. My thought then (and now) is how weird it is that we hear so little about all the people who are being injured and killed over there, and how it's minimized so that people won't get too depressed about the war. I guess my thoughts are that it's too overwhelming to come up with something pithy and relevant.

And, I think it would be very thoughtful and considerate for you to go to the funeral. Regardless of how we feel about the war, those soldiers are over there in our name.

Sorry. You seem to have hit all of us on the Day From Hell.

I do hope Alan feels better. Sick toddlers are no fun! Try and get some cuddle time with him tonight (if you haven't already). It'll do you both some good.

We're here. We're reading you. We're supportive. You're not alone!

I don't think I've even scrolled back that far yet (I scroll back and read, then open up links in new tabs and comment on them after I finish a page or 2).
