It seems boy’s shorts are longer than they used to be. Growing up in the 70’s they were mid thigh. Now they are knee length or even almost Capri length. Alan’s vintage Gymboree shorts are still that length but the newer stuff seems to run longer, especially the stuff in boys size 4. Actually back when I was growing up girl’s shorts were short also, but we didn’t really have capri’s or cropped pants then (unless by accident). Mark still has the shorter, tighter shorts for himself. Actually since he’s tall and thin, I like them better on him – long wide legged ones look huge on him.

It’s weird how fashion is. Gaucho pants are back. By the rule that if you wore it before, you shouldn’t this time, I probably should skip them – they remind me of an outfit I had in 8th grade – ultrasuede vest and gauchos with a polyester disco shirt. I kind of think they are funny looking.

But I also see leggings coming back under skirts or dresses. I remember not liking them at first in the 1980’s – the first ones I saw were white textured – I thought they looked like underware. But over time I grew to like them, especially with an oversized top covering my rear. I still have one pair from K-mart that’s a few years old (K-mart can be untrendy) and wear them with big T shirts (no shoulder pads though).

Around here the fashion is to get really baggy shorts that would come down to your knees if you wore a belt, and then to let them sag so your stylish underwear shows.

I never stopped wearing leggings under skirts and dresses, so I guess I get to keep wearing them? :) I always wear black though, and still do, since it's only because my thighs really hate each other and I hate stockings. Leggings are just far more comfy than tights..

The "long shorts" thing is ridiculous. The point of wearing shorts is that they're short - so that you don't get so hot. Having the shorts be that long defeats the purpose.

Gauchos are awful. Nobody looks good in gauchos. A big, wide flare right at the knee? It makes people look stocky, even if they're not.

I agree that the return of leggings under skirts is a good thing. I think I'll especially like it when it starts getting to be winter in Montana.

LOL...the shorts in the stores for Hannah are short shorts and the ones for Peter practically come down to his ankles. Go figure.

Hannah did tell me about the leggings under skirts thing a few weeks ago. She had dressed herself and insisted on wearing pants under a skirt. When I questioned it, she said that one of her teachers (read: college girls in the afternoon) wore it.

It's almost as if the MEN who are making the corporate purchasing decisions want to make sure women (and girls) have to buy clothing that is suggestive and sexy, while THEY get to cover up their own bodies.

Gauchos are the most horrible pants. They have the ability to make everyone look bad, even women with great bodies.

Even though there's a Kmart in my town, I never think of shopping for clothes there, because I *hated* it when my parents took me shopping at the Fitchburg Kmart when I was young -- it was so untrendy back then! So I guess I'm prejudiced now.

I have to go out of my way to go to Kmart, but I did go there a little when Alan was younger because they carried Sesame Street merchandise.

Oddly enough my ex-MIL was a office manager for many years for a Kmart on Staten Island and my ex did overnight stock there for a time.
