Some kids' cereals have as much sugar as a doughnut and have about the same nutritional value, an investigation by Consumer Reports shows.

(Naturally, Alan likes some of the worst 5 cereals and my husband likes some of the best 5).

My kids still talk about how I am the "mean mommy" who would never let sugary cereals into the house.

Gabe's cereals are all on the good lists, yay! I can't say I'm in the least surprised about Sugar Smacks. I mean, you eat a bowl and you're hungry 20 minutes later. It's pretty much obvious from the taste that it's a sugar vehicle. A tasty, tasty sugar vehicle.

They did a segment on the Today show a couple of weeks ago. Sometimes I can get my kids to mix their cereals so I let them have some of it and some of another. Win Win.

If this was a surprise to anybody, I guess I'm glad Consumer Reports is bothering to do the work.

Jeff doesn't even like the kids to have Honey Nut Cheerios! Mostly they have Raisin Bran and Cheerios. Every now and then Frosted Mini Wheats too. Not so bad, really.

My kids get by on frosted mini wheats (because they need the fiber and they actually eat them) honey nut cheerios (because they spoon gods of sugar on the plan ones) and Life, which I like but the kids tend to eat the whole box in a day!

Riddle me this though, at the store, nearly every type of cereal has a generic know off. Apple jacks and appley-Ohs, fruit loops and fruity rings, Rice checks and Rice squares, heck, even frosted mini wheats have a cheaper store brand alternative. Why no LIFE knock off? I would buy 3 boxes of life if it came in a store brand price bracket! As it is, it's like $4 a box for the 'big' box that still only lasts a matter of HOURS in my house!

I actually like frosted mini-wheats and also eat them for fiber.

I never noticed there was no generic life cereal. I've at least gotten Alan to eat whatever is on sale when we go shopping and not to care about the brand names.

We did have a good sale at a local supermarket last week where you got 7 boxes of quaker cereals (life, oatmeal squares, captain crunch) for 7.77. I noticed they had the least amount of the life cereal left when we stopped by during the week!

I like Life too but it's so freaking expensive. Bill is a weirdo and will ONLY eat Life. But if we let anybody but him eat life, we'd be buying who knows how many $3 boxes of cereal every week. So I find deals on other cereals for the rest of us. :-P

ha ha ha, we were only allowed to watch Cosby show on Thurs nights and sat morning cartoons until 9 am. My kids are only allowed to watch tv if their room is clean and the playroom is picked up. So ummm they never watch tv...

I didn't ever have the sugary cereals as a child. They just weren't in the house. I grew up on Corn Flakes, Shredded Wheat (not frosted,) and Cheerios. Once I became a teenager, others were allowed as by then I didn't have much of a sweet tooth and I guess my mom was satisfied good eating habits had been established. Annie like Clint's granola and Kix, but she mostly eats homemade oatmeal and waffles for breakfast.
