I've NAK (nursed at keyboard) and in a pulled over car...not even with Alan in the car seat...but I can't imagine doing that?

Why would any state have car seat exemptions for nursing mothers. I'd like to see the text of that law! I have often nursed in the car, with the baby strapped in the car seat, but never while I was driving!! When I've been driving I have pulled into a McDonalds parking lot, or other well lit place and nursed in the car but I would Never drive with an unsecured infant in the car, let alone in my lap! That's just NUTS!

That's what I thought. The legal loophole is that if the state you're licensed in allows you to do something like that, you can get away with it in other states. But what the heck kind of crazy legislation would make it legal to drive with a child not only unrestrained, but laying on your lap? Imagine what would happen to the baby's head in a collision!

But didn't the article also say she wasn't licensed?

Sheesh, just because something is legal, doesn't make it the right thing to do. Smoking is legal. Drinking yourself into a coma is legal, doesn't mean we should all run out and do it!

Nah, it just said she didn't have a license with her.

But I totally agree with you. For instance, our state has no helmet law - you can ride a bike or motorcycle without wearing one. Legally it's OK, sure, but what kind of idiot gets on the freeway on a bullet bike with no helmet? Law or no law, no kid of mine's riding a bike without proper headgear and probably pads too!

I would think that any mother who truly cares about her kid would keep it in the car seat while the car is moving. Aside from the obvious distraction of holding and feeding the baby while driving, there's also the question of what happens if someone hits her car? Baby gets a nice close look at the steering column and/or windshield, and Mom, if she survives, is out one baby.

Sure, as the woman in the article said, car accidents do happen -- but that's why car seats were invented, to minimize the likelihood of a child's getting hurt or killed if there should be an accident.
