After seeing Malcom in The Middle promoted on Saturday morning at 10 during Penguins of Madagascar, I made sure to write Nick tonight. (I think I have found the presents e-mail).

I did some online research - it appears that they are shifting the 8-9 slot to an older crowd (12-17). I don't fault them for doing that, but they should not be promoting the 12+ shows when they clearly know under 12's are watching. I also saw that in the fall, they will also accquire Everybody Hates Chris (based on Chris Rock). I have no idea how family friendly that is either - although I think that was on at 8PM originally. I'd just like them to consider that many of the younger viewers are used to Nick at 8PM having grown up with SpongeBob reruns on at that time.

We got excited when they added Malcolm. Elliot loves the show. Never occurred to me that some of the material could be inappropriate. Your house; your rules. Compared to Two and a Half Men (another of his favorite shows), Malcolm seems G rated to us.

How old is Elliot?

I agree different parents have different opions on what is appropriate - but there is a big difference in content and target market between Malcom in the Middle and the previous shows in the 8 PM slot. It is something that Nick should consider with their programming.

I think the thing is that many people use dvrs and vod for kids shows at this point, with many people going towards online programming options, the individual networks no longer feel like they have to pander to specific demographics at specific times anymore. You'll see the same trend on stations like cbs nbc and abc, they've found that prime time isn't the same since dvrs.
Personally, my kids are expected to be in bed or reading at 8 and I limit their tv to an hour or less per day. We stopped letting them watch so much tv when they started elementary school, I've found that they behave better and they've learned to be more self entertaining since the tv went off.

Malcolm used to be in the 6:30-7:30 timeslots on non-cable out here and my kids loved it. I figure, if a show has them ask questions about sex then I'm the one they come to. But they never picked up on those things and asked. The one thing they did pick up on was no matter how angry or goofy the parents got, they still loved each other.

There are other shows that I find absolutely annoying though that are catered to the kids. Squidward is very, very insulting. The things he says coming out of a kid's mouth are horrible. The Mighty B is equally terrible. The things Sam and Freddy say to each other on iCarly is said in fun, but sound insulting when my kids say them to each other.

In my childhood, Nickelodeon was known for having the more questionable things. Most of the day, I wasn't allowed to watch it. I could watch Pinwheel in the morning. It wasn't until I was old enough to stay up to 9:0) that I got to watch Nick at Night (Car 54 type of stuff). Bedtime around here is 7:30 though so the 8:00 timeslot doesn't concern us. Plus, at that time of day, if the TV is still on, the adults have taken it over and we are usually watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.

I would imagine that after 8 pm most of the kids watching will be over 10. It's harder in the summer, but at 9 and 6 we start getting them ready for bed at 8 pm. Any less sleep than that and life is no fun at all for anyone. But DVRs and on-demand TV have changed everyone's watching habits. We record Penguins and Sid the Science Kid and a bunch of things that (we consider!) are appropriate, and they can watch that when there is TV time.

thanks for the nudge :-)

Malcom in the Middle and Everybody Hates Chris are not family friendly IMO. Why not just add Family Guy to the line-up?
