I really want to move out of our 2 bedroom condo. But DH keeps looking at it as investment and thinks houses are overpriced and they will lose value. So we keep looking - it doesn't help that we live in (and aren't moving) in one of the most expensive housing areas - Bergen County..our less than 1000 sq feet condo would currently sell for over 200K and it could use cosmetic work.

I guess I'm a little envious of [livejournal.com profile] dstroy, [livejournal.com profile] ginky and [livejournal.com profile] magnummom who are in the house hunting/buying process right now :(

I'm feeling the same way so I feel for you. With Eric not having a steady job we are not even close.

Your DH needs to look at reality. Population isn't dropping, housing costs have been rising 100% every 10 years for the past 40. The longer you wait the more stuff will cost and these are the lowest interest reates in 41 years. Whats the real issue for him?

Accept, Compromise or sabatage.
Love him and say yes dear.
Find out what he needs to get comfortable with the idea
Let the 2 bedroom place get too crowded and maddening until it breaks his mold and freaks out, get friends with new homes to invite you both over so that they can rave over the great move and work his jealousy center.

Interesting; I've always heard that it's condos that aren't a good investment because they don't come with land. Houses tend to increase in value over time.

Have you thought of looking at the surrounding areas? I know all of North Jersey is pretty pricey since I lived there most of my life, but Bergen County is by far the worst since it's so close to the city.

I'm hoping that we'll be able to look for a house next year. We haven't before because we knew we didn't want to stay in NJ or FL, but so far we like Virginia and we may want to stay here permanently. I'd love to not have to share walls/floors/ceilings with neighbors...we've been pretty lucky to have quiet neighbors for the most part, but it's a little annoying to have to smell their cooking because we share ventilation!

funny, but my sister is house hunting as well. they are currently in the sticks of mercer county looking to move more into where the action is :)

extremely pricey in bergen co. no doubt. franklin park, ridgewood, all nice areas, but be prepared for outrageous prices.

my brother lives in ridgewood, and they got a tiny 2 bedroom cape cod for 390k. that home placed where i live with hardly any yard to speak of would run about 70k. you are certainly paying for the neighborhood and conviences AND some of the best schools in the country.

Our housing prices are ridiculous. We live in a partially rejuvenated fixer upper - one story, 4 bedroom 2 bath (only 1 bath is functional, though), 1433 square feet, reasonable-sized yard. Nothing remarkable. It would sell as is for around $475K. If you saw my house, believe me, you'd be amazed at that selling price. It's nuts.

You must live in California. California and our area in NJ are the 2 most expensive areas to live in.

Moving to another part of the country isn't possible for us alas.

Yup, I live in the San Francisco Bay Area in California! We can't move either at the moment.
